Taiwanese travel agent finds health and calmness practicing Falun Dafa (Falun Gong)

Jin Yingli started practising Falun Dafa in Taiwan when she was in her 40s. Below is her story of how it helped improve her health, character and wellbeing.

Ever since I was a child, I’d had poor health. I was very thin and had a sallow complexion. I had so little energy that at school I would just sit quietly while my classmates played outside. I felt too tired to play on the swing or skipping rope with my friends. Whenever I went on outings, I would catch a cold or develop a fever. I never had the joy of running and playing like other children. As I grew older, it seemed as if my life was passing by and I didn’t know what to do.

Years later, after I graduated, I went to work in the travel industry. My friends thought this choice was ironic because I lived like a hermit and stayed at home during my holidays. I worked hard every day and when I got home, I was so tired that I had to go straight to bed. The only way I could get through each day was by sheer determination. 

Back then, the travel industry was booming, and I was well paid. But none of the money I earned could help change my health. My life seemed so miserable. Others pursued wealth and a successful career, but I didn’t want any of those things. All I wanted was to be healthy so I could live a normal life.

Looking for a change brings me to Falun Gong

By the time I was 42, I had started searching for alternative ways to improve my health. I became a vegetarian, tried yoga and attended Buddhist classes. One day, I was at the doctor’s office with my father when I saw a book on the shelf that I felt drawn to. The doctor saw my interest and told me that the book was excellent and I was welcome to borrow it. The book was Zhuan Falun, the main teachings of Falun Dafa.

As I read the book, it answered all my questions! I had always complained about my misfortune in having such poor health, but after reading Zhuan Falun, I understood that misfortune or success in life is the result of karma and virtue accrued in past lives. 

I began to practice Falun Dafa, and felt a heavy burden being lifted from my shoulders. I used to get dizzy whenever I looked up. I had tried all kinds of iron supplements and health products when I was younger, but nothing helped. I often felt weak and was grateful just to be able to take in a gasp of air. But after I began practicing Falun Dafa and doing the exercises, I felt wonderful. My body felt very light, and my near-sightedness disappeared. I was able to breathe in as much air as I wanted. I didn’t feel tired no matter how far I walked, and my mind became much clearer.

Changing my thinking and response to others, learning to have more patience

After six months of practicing, I felt renewed. My outlook on life and the world changed completely. I stopped complaining about how unfair my life was and I felt calm and optimistic about my future. The teachings of Falun Dafa taught me to look within and be kind to others, which fundamentally changed the way I handled problems. In the past, I would be upset when I was treated unfairly at work, but Falun Dafa taught me to forgive others during conflicts.

My work as a travel agent means I need to deal with customers directly. Problems can crop up and sometimes customers cancel their overseas trips at the last minute. When this happens, they think they don’t have to pay for anything, including the administration fees we paid upfront on their behalf. In the past, I would get very upset with them, but after I became a practitioner, I changed my thinking. Perhaps they had a good reason for cancelling the trip so I would absorb the costs. I would also ask myself if perhaps I'm too attached to financial gain, which is why I ran into this situation. After I let go of that attachment, amazingly, such incidents never happened again.

When things happen unexpectedly, they test my character. One time a customer was supposed to catch a plane at 2 pm and he arrived at the airport at 1:50 pm. When I asked why he was so late, he replied that he still had another 10 minutes. At first, I couldn’t believe his reply, but then I remembered the teachings of Falun Dafa. I should look at myself first to see if there’s anything I could improve on. I realised my thinking about him was wrong. Some people haven't travelled by plane before and I should have told him that he needed to get to the airport early to check in.

Another time, the airport informed me that two guests had checked in their baggage but hadn't boarded the plane, and it was time to take off. I couldn’t contact the passengers because their phones were switched off. The airline company said they couldn’t wait any longer, so I told them to close the gates. Later, I found the passengers in the duty-free shop. They had lost track of time. I didn’t get angry at them — instead I saw where my part was lacking. I had relaxed after helping them check in and I didn’t stay in touch with them afterwards. As a result, they missed their flight. I knew that I should have followed through until they’d boarded.

Once my co-worker told me that he had a group of travellers stuck overseas due to bad weather. Everyone in the office had gone home for the day, but I decided to stay and help him handle the travellers’ visas, book accommodation, arrange for their food and air fares. Many years later, after he left the company, he told me he was still grateful for what I did that day. He said that my actions showed him that Falun Dafa is good.

Learning to be calm during difficult situations

I have had countless difficult situations have happened during my 30 years of work. Many things come up suddenly and need to be handled urgently. Falun Dafa helped me learn not to have any negative thoughts, but to calm down and deal with the situation appropriately.

Falun Dafa also helped me find hope in life and changed my health struggles, when I thought my body would never get better. The book of Falun Dafa’s teachings brought me a life changing miracle. I hope that everyone can discover their purpose in life and find true happiness by practicing Falun Dafa.
