A New Zealand Master's student shares how reading Falun Dafa books and practicing its five exercises led to lasting energy and character changes.

Gia Do is completing an intensive one-year Master of Teaching at Waikato University, New Zealand. Since learning Falun Dafa five years ago, and studying the teachings in the main book, Zhuan Falun*, she has found direct application to her life.*

Improving my moral character by reading a book that changed my life

I’ve always enjoyed reading, so when my sister gave me a copy of the Zhuan Falun, the main book of Falun Gong, I thought I’d read it. I’d heard that the spiritual practice was persecuted in China by the CCP, but until then I hadn’t been particularly interested.

After reading Zhuan Falun for the first time, I realised that this practice really could help me improve my character and become a better version of myself.

For example, there’s a story in Zhuan Falun about Han Xin, one of China’s greatest generals, who used to carry a sword. One day a ruffian challenged Han Xin to cut off his head with the sword, but Han Xin knew that he couldn’t kill someone at will. So instead of harming the man, Han Xin endured the humiliation of crawling between his legs.

When I read this story in Zhuan Falun, I understood that, because Han Xin was able to bear both physical and mental hardships, he could achieve great things and later even became the backbone of Han Dynasty.

I understood how these principles applied to my own situation of living by myself in New Zealand and having to complete an intensive one-year course. Instead of complaining and seeing my loneliness and workload as hardship, I started to instead see it as an opportunity to develop greater mental toughness, which made a huge difference.

Feelings of being energised by the Falun Dafa exercises

Practicing the Falun Dafa exercises has helped me gain clarity of mind. Whenever I finish doing the 5 exercises, I feel energised. The result is that I can better process my high study workload.

Particularly after doing the 5th exercise, the sitting mediation, also called ‘Strengthening Divine Powers’, my mind feels as though it has been cleansed by a stream of medicinal water. Fully focusing on the meditation music for 1 hour means I can set aside all my daily worries and let my brain fully rest.

If you get the chance, I hope you can read Zhuan Falun at least once. It can provide a really comprehensive and truthful insight into Falun Dafa as a spiritual practice.
